7QT Friday: Windows into Heaven

7 quick takes sm1 7 Quick Takes Friday (vol. 220)

  • Today is the Feast of the Sacred Heart; this first stained glass window celebrates this day.
  • This Friday I cannot resist sharing 7 quick reflections on stained glass. Lately I have been captured by the beauty and power of both stained glass and icons because for me, they are windows or portals into the presence of God

  • When we die we will all see clearly and realize that we really did not understand as much as we think we did anyway. St, Paul says we see through a mirror darkly. The most holy men realized that the closer they actually got to God, the less the really knew.
  • The Catholic Church and most particularly contemplatives and mystics understand that we cannot always trust what we see and think. Reality is in the present moment but exist under the surface of physical objects; reality can only be found in God.
  • Thank goodness, the Catholic Church understands that when  a sacramental is blessed, what we see, smell, taste and hear can help us get in touch with ultimate reality which is God.  Stained glass windows, consecrated as part of a church building and in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament in the tabernacle, are powerful portals into spiritual reality because they draw us out of our narrow little world into His presence.
  • The light of God literally shines through the stained glass, ushering us into the heavenlies. As our eyes drink in beauty, we let go of petty worries and surrender our selves to the present moment where God can touch us with His peace and love.
