Do you remember this song, Day by Day in the Broadway play “GodSpell”? Well, it is based on a prayer from the 13th century.
Day by Day
Day by day
Day by day
Oh Dear Lord
Three things I pray
To see thee more clearly
Love thee more dearly
Follow thee more nearly
Day by day
The original PRAYER:
Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ, for all the benefits Thou hast given me, for all the pains and insults which Thou hast borne for me.
O most merciful Redeemer, Friend, and Brother,
may I know Thee more clearly, love Thee more dearly,
follow Thee more nearly, day by day. Amen.
This prayer was written by St. Richard of Chichester in the 13th century.
St Richard, who was Bishop of Chichester for eight years in the mid-13th century, was well acquainted with both hard work and suffering.
Though a gifted scholar and lawyer, he did not flinch from physical labour, and as Bishop, he found himself a homeless outcast in his own diocese, until King Henry III finally accepted his appointment by the Pope.
His prayer reflects the commitment and ‘stickability’ needed by anyone who seeks to be a true follower of Jesus.

Very interesting. I enjoyed it.

I love your blog. It’s just a quiet place to lurk. I very much enjoy reading about ideas far removed from most of the rest of my life – startups and software. Looking forward to reading your book.
